I. What should we include in our description of a "standards-based" lesson?
Based on our brainstorming, the class decided on four elements that we should include in our lesson descriptions:
Element
What does element include?
Why is this important?
1. Standards, benchmarks, and objectives.
The standard (a broad statement of learning goal), benchmarks (more specific indicators that the goal has been met) and learning objectives (indicator that Ss have learned what they were supposed to for that lesson).
One of the key contributions of standards-based curriculum is a clear connection between daily instruction and goals that people in and outside of the school can agree on.
2. Description of the Learning Environment.
must be educational, engaging, and interactive
kids will enjoy and remember what they learn and will learn to work with different types of people
3. Description of Learning Activity
This includes the actual activity, whatever the assignment consists of. For example, the activity is to compare hot and cold climates, the learning activity would be to draw a diagram.
It is important because it shows the teacher what the students have learned and shows how well they complete the assignment.
4. Assessment Strategies.
help the teachers know what information the students understand and what information needs to be reviewed or taught in a different way
Testing, Report Cards, Different/ a variety of teaching methods, progress report cards. Another key contribution of standards-based teaching is the expectation that all students can learn important content. Teachers need to assess Ss in a variety of ways to make sure this is happening.
